Prayer For 2012

Dear Church Family,

We begin this new year in a posture of desperate dependence on the grace of God our Father, through His Son's perfect merit, poured out by the Holy Spirit.

With King Jehoshaphat we say, "Lord, we are powerless; we don't know what to do; but our eyes are on you" (see 2 Chronicles 20:12).

Thankfully, the Scriptures promise that when our eyes are upon God, His eyes are fixed on us: "The eyes of the LORD are toward the righteous and his ears toward their cry" (Psalm 34:15).

This Sunday, we will fix our eyes on the Lord by resuming our Behold Our God Bible Reading Plan in 1 Samuel. If you haven't joined yet, now would be a great time to jump in!

And tonight we will fix our eyes on the Lord in a time of corporate prayer, from 5:30—6:30 and from 6:40—7:45.

To aid you in expressing your dependence on God as we dedicate ourselves in this new year to Him, I've included two prayers that I've found helpful this week.

Grateful for God's empowering Spirit,

David Sunday

Prayer for 2012

Valley of Vision (Banner of Truth), page 112:
O Lord,
Length of days does not profit me except the days are passed
in thy presence,
in thy service,
to thy glory.
Give me a grace that
precedes,
follows,
guides,
sustains,
sanctifies,
aids every hour,
that I may not be one moment apart from thee,
but may rely on thy Spirit
to supply every thought,
speak in every word,
direct every step,
prosper every work,
build up every mote of faith,
and give me a desire
to show forth thy praise,
testify thy love,
advance thy kingdom.
I launch my bark [ship] on the unknown waters of this year,
with thee, O Father, as my harbour,
thee, O Son, at my helm,
thee, O Holy Spirit, filling my sails.
Guide me to heaven with my loins girt,
my lamp burning,
my ear open to thy calls,
my heart full of love,
my soul free.
Give me thy grace to sanctify me,
thy comforts to cheer,
thy wisdom to teach,
thy right hand to guide,
thy counsel to instruct,
thy law to judge,
thy presence to stabilize.
May thy fear be my awe,
thy triumphs my joy.

A Prayer for 2012 (Adapted from Jonathan Edwards’ Resolutions)

Lord God Almighty,
I understand that I am unable to do anything without your help,
so I ask you to enable me by your grace to fulfill your will.
Give me grace to do whatever brings most glory and honor to you,
pleasure and profit to me,
and life and love to others.
Help me to number my days,
spending my time wisely,
living my life with all my might while I still have breath.
Humble me in the knowledge that I am chief of sinners;
when I hear of the sins of others,
help me to not look upon them with pride,
but to look upon myself with shame,
confessing my own sins to you.
When I go through difficulties and trials,
remind me of the pains of hell
from which you have already delivered me.
Place people in my path who need my help,
and give me a compassionate and generous spirit.
Fill my heart with such love
that I would never do anything out of a spirit of revenge,
nor lose my temper with those around me.
Hold my tongue when I am tempted to speak evil of others.
Thank you for the gospel and for the hope of glory.
Help me to live in light of these truths every day of my life,
so that when the time of my death arrives,
I will rest assuredly in you,
and you will be most glorified in me.
In Christ’s name…
